Red Eyed Soul Interview
Written By:
Music and Band Ezine’s Publisher, Paul Heingarten
This week the featured interview is Red Eyed Soul, which is really
the work of solo artist Richard Soles.
Q: How did you come up with the name of your band?
A: There are two main reasons for the name. One is an expression of a
feeling. I think about all the things that give someone red eyes
or the typical uses of the term red eye. Tiredness, weeping (from
sadness or joy), stress, all of that stuff. As well as, as a lot
of us are unfortunately familiar with, red eye flights. So yeah…
take all that and apply the feelings and reasons to the soul and
there you go: Red Eyed Soul. It just…accurately describes the
songs I write. Oh, and the second is reason is much simpler: An
album by the great band The World/Inferno Friendship Society is
called “Red Eyed Soul.” Great record.
Q: What genre (if any) would you classify your music in?
A: Um. It’s mainly acoustic. A mixture of American folk and some
blues and more modern, indie folk of today. But the songs are
mostly based around a strong lyrical foundation (not to toot my
own horn, but I’m not much of a guitarist or pianist so my lyrics
are all I really got!). Since all of the songs are generally
melancholic in tone though, I like to call it Sad Bastard Music.
Q: Do you play only originals, or do you do covers? In your average
gig, what’s the ratio of original songs to covers?
A: I play both. On average I’ll only play one cover at any given
show. Then again, I can’t read guitar tabs (I can hear them coming
to take my guitarist membership card away right now…) so it’s
difficult for me to learn many covers.
Q: Who are your musical influences?
A: Damn, there are a lot of them. But not many that you’d expect for
my genre. Heavily, heavily influence by Queen, which is my
favorite band; but also a large variety of stuff. I don’t usually
take influence from artists who sound similar to me, but rather, I
take influence from bits and pieces of other bands. Queen for
their overall work ethic and love for music and from Freddie
Mercury especially for his showmanship and passion. Stuff like
that. Different bands and artists for various reasons.
Q: What are your songs about?
A: Oh, standard stuff. Love, loss, friends, family, things like
that. I’m in a steady relationship so there’s some love songs.
Songs about personal problems. Songs about my brother’s battle
with addiction. Typical young, sensitive artist crap. Ha ha ha…
Q: What are your band’s goals?
A: I’d like to reach a point where I could do music professionally.
Not famous. I’d never want to, like, “make it big” or anything,
but to be able to make a living from music would be nice.
Q: Do you sell CD’s or MP3′s of your music? If so, where could
someone find them?
A: Not yet, no. I had one CD available a while back but it wasn’t
worth listening to so I never pressed more than fifty copies and I
gave those away for free. However, if anyone wants to send an
email to redeyedsoulmusic@gmail.com I’d be happy to pass the demos
I have available now along to them.
Q: What are your most and least favorite venues to play, and why?
A: I love small, dingy types of places and coffee shops. They work
the best for the type of music I play. Little theaters, people’s
living rooms and basements, small pubs, and of course coffee
shops. Great for acoustic, singer-songwriter type stuff.
Q: Which songs do you perform most frequently?
A: Um…usually whatever’s fresh, the newest stuff. But there are
some standards that I play a lot. It’s hard to say because there
isn’t a lot of recorded material of mine available right now, so I
don’t want to name songs that people can’t hear. Ha ha ha… Come
out to a show and you can hear my stuff there! Again, just shoot
me an email and I’ll be happy to fill you in on any upcoming show
dates. I don’t have a MySpace or anything (yet, I might cave soon)
so you can’t find them there.
Q: On a gig, do you play from a set list or do you just pick songs
on the spot?
A: A mixture of both. Mostly from a set list but I’ll play
whatever feels good.
Q: Who in the band writes your songs?
A: Well, since it’s just me in this “band”, I do. =)
Q: How has your music evolved since you started playing together?
A: I’ll answer this one a little differently, no sarcasm like the
one above. Even though this is a solo effort I’ve still been able
to play with a lot of great musicians over the last few years and
through that I have evolved. It’s not longer like, “Okay, cram as
many words you can into this one song and then play the same two
chords over and over again.” Now I take more time with structure
and melody. As well as set up and delivery of a song. The music
is still simplistic and minimalist, nothing fancy but it all
works better now, it’s more thought out.
Q: Last thoughts?
A: Um….sure! I love music and I would love to be able to keep
doing it. A: Hell, I’ll even keep my day job if I can keep
playing. Support your local musicians, and if you are one:
Good luck and Godspeed. Thanks!

Horror Punks “The Order of the Fly”
Written By: Pandie
Horror Punks “The Order of the Fly” The Order of the Fly
(www.myspace.com/theorderofthefly) are a horror punk outfit from San
Bernadino, California. They have fun songs with titles like “Rot”,
“Lambs in the Abattoir”, and “Eaters of the Dead” (hot!), a sexy
goth/scary skeleton-faced aesthetic and a sick sense of humor. I
love them!
A few weeks ago, in the hot, sweaty studios of Flashrock.com I was
fortunate enough to get (and survive!) an interview with the band.
Believe me, it did smell like someone had been eating the dead in
there that day! Check out the order of the fly rocking their
stuff, followed by a tell-all interview where we discuss masks,
make up, dressing up in women’s clothing and of course…the
secret location of the nexus of the order of the fly…Enjoy!
It was a joy to finally interview someone paler than me!

God Gave Rock and Roll to You
Written By: Jeremy
I’ve talked with quite a few people lately who maintain that
Christian rock music and Christian rap are sinful and lead to a
life of rejecting God. I simply can’t fathom how they come up
with this idea? It’s ridiculous to say that this music is sinful
and of the devil if you actually listen to it. Many of the lyrics
are scripture taken right out of the Bible. Some have even gone
as far to remake hymns into Christian Rock songs and Christian rap
songs. So why is a hymn that is sung in church acceptable but a
Christian rock song with the same lyrics unacceptable in these
people’s eyes?
Many state that it doesn’t matter what the words are and what
message they are promoting rather it’s the fast beat and loud
guitars that make the music bad (a completely dumbfounding
statement if you ask me). I’ve heard statements from people like
“I tried listening to rock music once and it made me feel
rebellious so I am against it.” If you are feeling rebellious
because of listening to a certain type of music then maybe
Christian rock and rap are not for you, but don’t blame the music.
If your faith is that wavering that you think hearing a type of
music will make you stray then it seems you have bigger issues
with your faith and need to deal with that on a personal level
between you and God.
I’ve also heard accusations that Christian rock and rap make it
tempting to do other sinful things and that it serves as a bridge
to worldly temptations. Let me ask you this then, should we avoid
drinking grape juice because it may lead to drinking wine? After
all wine is just fermented grape juice. What if we just drink
grape juice and never end up drinking wine is that a bad thing
because they are so closely related. No it is not, and to say
listening to Christian rock and rap is the gateway to secular
music or worldly sin, or that it is the same thing, is just as
absurd as my grape juice and wine analogy. This is just another
example where I can say if your faith is wavering that much that
hearing a song is going to diminish it than you may have other
issues to deal with.
What about the musicians in Christian rock and rap? Are you
denying them the gift and talent that God has given them? These
musicians are choosing to use their talent to glorify God, YES
THEY ARE GLORIFYING GOD. Just because they play an electric
guitar instead of an organ doesn’t mean that their talent is being
misused.
What’s the purpose of Christianity anyway? If I said to accept
Jesus as your savior and to witness to others and share his word
would you agree that this is for the most part the main purpose of
Christianity? So then what is wrong with doing this through
Christian rock and rap? These artists are born again believers
who are witnessing through their music and concerts that they
perform at. I’ve been to many Christian rock concerts and rap
concerts and let me tell you the amount of people who become
saved at these events would rival any church function. You
should be applauding the actions of these artists rather than
condemning them.
Is all Christian rock and rap good? No of course not, there are
those with the wrong intentions who abuse the system but this is
true for anything and is a very small percentage. You shouldn’t
judge an entire genre for the few that are doing wrong. Should I
say that all pastors are evil because of the few bad ones that
molest children or smuggle money from the church? No, like I said
there is always a percentage of anything that will give an entire
organization a bad name.
So I ask of you who really despise this music, is it really the
music you are having issues with, or is it something deeper within
yourself? Why don’t you do a little more research than just
listening to one song and then passing judgment? Don’t just feed
off of the few bad apples in a bunch either. The bottom line is
Christian rock and rap serve as a great ministry and to deny them
of that is a sin in itself.
