Five Awesome Bands That Will Broaden Your Horizons

If you’re anything like me, listening to the radio makes
you want to swallow a knife. The top forty sucks; it’s
completely, utterly tasteless, and no self-respecting
music lovers would dare subject themselves to that
garbage. If I have to hear another song by Ke$ha, Katy
Perry, or Will Smith’s god damned daughter one more
time, I’m just going to have to end it. Note, however,
that I would still end it like a badass. My plan would
be as follows:

Step 1 – Obtain a long piece of razor thin, sharp metal.

Step 2 – Tie said metal rope over a rafter.

Step 3 – While standing on a chair, place the sharp
metal rope around my neck.

Step 4 – Super glue my hands to the top of my head.

Step 5 – Jump.

“This guy rules… he ripped his own damn head off.”
That’s right. Screw you Willow Smith. If only I had
listened to….

#1 – The Mars Volta

If you’re a true fan of musicianship, this is the band
for you. While I’ll admit they can be a bit overbearing
when you first hear them, any musician can tell you that
their music is innovative, fresh, and downright awesome.
The Mars Volta has managed to flawlessly blend rock,
jazz, Latin, and other styles, producing a sound that
is completely unique and overall, just amazing. Every
time I listen to this band, I want to fist pump like I
was in Jersey Shore. Do yourself a favor, and check
them out.

I recommend “The Bedlam in Goliath” as the album to
listen to first. As an added bonus, the album features
their new drummer, Thomas Pridgen, who was sponsored by
Zildjian at age 10.

#2 – Animals as Leaders

An instrumental metal band, Animals as Leaders also
features astounding musicianship. Guitar players will be
especially fond of this band, as will any rock
enthusiast. These guys have amazing talent, and yet
Nickelback is on the radio. I don’t get it. So far, they
have only released one album, but I’ve been listening to
it for a couple of years now, and I still haven’t gotten
burned out. This is definitely a band to check out.

#3 – Death From Above 1979

If you’re more into the dance-rock scene, may I
recommend Death From Above 1979. Guaranteed to make you
tap your leg, and much more of a fresh listen than say…
Fallout Boy. Definitely an innovative band.

If that doesn’t make you want to just leave your
computer and start moshing with your church pastor, I
don’t know what will.

#4 – Florence and the Machine

A bit of a different style from the aforementioned
bands, Florence has a great musical style, a unique
voice, and a fresh musical sound. Girls may be
especially fond of Florence, but her music is enjoyable
regardless of gender. My personal favorite song of hers
is “Dog Days”. She’s got quite the voice.

Ahh, refreshing.

#5 – Incubus

Not a new band by any means, nor unfamiliar, but I
highly suggest rediscovering this band. They have a
fantastic, unique style that I won’t ever get tired of.
If you’ve never listened to Incubus before, shame on
you. However, it’s never too late to start. They have
so many fantastic songs, and great musicians make up the
core of the band. My personal favorite songs are “While
All the Vultures Feed”, “Sick Sad Little World”, and
“Pardon Me”.

Hell yes. I’m going to go smash my radio to bits like
old dude in Office Space.

How to get my music heard? This is usually the number
one query that most of the musicians that I deal with
have. I normally surprise them with the answer.

When people approach me for ideas about promoting their
music they have nearly always done the same things with
little or no success:

Set up a website/MySpace/Facebook page

Played regular small gigs in front of their friends,
family and associates and sold them the odd t-shirt or
cd.

Recorded a demo that they hope someone outside of their
friends, family and associates will listen to, and then
call them saying that they are the next big thing.

This is what I call Sympathy Marketing, relying on your
small warm market to keep you feeling like a
musician/band before you finally get discovered.

To be bigger you have to think smarter and get out of
the sympathy market. Below are the 2 steps that I
recommend and the 3 reasons why I recommend them:

Step one:

Join Twitter, yes that’s right another social networking
tool. Twitter has advanced search options that can help
musicians target people interested in their musical
niche. Many Twitter followers have it installed on their
cell-phone, there are 3 times as many cell-phones as
personal computers and it’s the ideal tool to push out
instant communication to your new-found followers.

Once you have gained a few free followers that are out
of your sympathy market it’s time for step two:

Join Fan Bridge, it’s a site that concentrates on
helping you find fans and more importantly keep fans.
The system they use keeps your fans informed and your
market warm. Relationship marketing is where it’s at in
any industry where you are looking to be successful.

The 3 reasons that I recommend the above steps are:

They are no-cost and low-cost options that, used
properly, can gain you large numbers of targeted fans
and get you out of the sympathy (friends, family and
associates) market.

They are easy to do, you are a musician not an online
marketing guru, you need to do something where you can
see results quickly that isn’t done to death by every
other musician.

Getting your music heard is now a whole lot easier
because you’re only dealing with fans that genuinely
want to follow you and have a relationship with. You are
now starting out with a warm fan base that you can
market your music and merchandise to.

UHFD ( The Unbearable Hand Fate Dealt) was created when
Zach James met Andrue Sullivan in Memphis. After the two
collaborated on several projects James was inspired to
do something very different which incorporated Andrue’s
soul and choral background with his own progressive
rock style.

From 2006 to 2009 Zach recorded the music for The Moth.
In the Summer of 2009 Andrue and Zach began vocals for
The Moth and the record was completed and officially
released in April of 2010. The art for the record was
done by acclaimed artist Yuki Nishimura
(www.yukinishimura.com)

Currently the live band consists of James, Sullivan,
William Cook on drums, and Kevin Underwood often making
an appearance on guitar. Of the project Zach James has
said “Essentially there are two UHFD’s. There is the
recording that I do on my own which can’t be hindered by
what I’m limited to pull off live. Then there’s UHFD
live which can’t be confined by what was recorded.”

Vocoder Synthesizer SV – 5

This app gives musicians a powerful synthesizer on the
go. Amazingly, it features a fully functioning vocoder
(giving users a robot-like voice they can play on the
iPhone screen). This app utilizes the iPhone’s
microphone, so the vocoder will only work for iPhone
users. Amazingly, this app allows users to save and
upload patches they create to share with other iPhone
musicians. This app really utilizes all of the iPhone’s
capabilities, and lets musicians explore complex sounds

Band is a fun app for the iPhone that can serve as a
handy tool to musicians. The Band app features a

Musicians can use this app to play musical ideas at the
moment they strike, so they won’t forget the great
melodies they come up with. This app also includes a 3×4
drum pad allowing musicians to lay down beats on their
iPhone. The best part is Band can record musicians’
ideas (even using an optional click track). At $3.99,
this iPhone app is both fun and affordable. Karajan For
real musicians, Karajan is an extremely useful app for
the iPhone. This app lets musicians practice ear
training, a valuable skill that requires time and
practice. The app plays musical intervals or scales and
prompts the iPhone user to identify them by ear. Chord
identification is also a useful app feature for
musicians. Musicians studying music theory will find
this app turns their iPhone into a powerful teaching
tool. Although iPhone users have to pay $14.99 for the
full app, there is a free version for beginners.

These apps make portable music making affordable and
fun. Any musician knows that inspiration can strike at

When bands go on a nation-wide or international tour, it
is a very exciting time in their careers. The management
team is faced with a few important decisions when
planning a tour and one of them is transportation.
Renting a band bus is like a home away from home on
wheels. It has all the necessary living facilities right
on board. The benefits of this mode of transportation
include cost-efficiency, convenience and the camaraderie
that is formed from travelling together in close
quarters.

In order for a tour to be profitable, management must
consider the cost of the transportation for the band and
its crew as part of the planning process. Renting a band
bus is the most affordable way to travel in large
numbers. In most cases, there only needs to be one
driver. There are styles and sizes of buses that can

with the hassle of airports when band members can just
jump on a bus to their next destination and begin

Flying from city to city and staying in hotel rooms does
not foster the same band camaraderie that travelling on
a bus does. Band buses are known in rock n roll history
for being a place where bad behavior takes place and
stories are made. Travelling bands take their sex, drugs
and rock n roll with them on the road, which creates
friendship and solidarity between the members as they
spend so much time together.

The facilities on these buses make them comfortable and
homely. The most expensive coaches even have a luxury
feel to them. They all have lounges, bunk beds, and
kitchenettes so the bands have a place to relax, sleep,
and eat while they are on the road. Flat panel
televisions, DVD players, and other types of equipment
are standard on these buses, keeping the band members
and their crew entertained while they travel from place
to place.

The band bus has a definite place in rock n roll
history. Musicians have been travelling on the road for
decades and the tradition will remain a strong part of
the business as long as live music continues to draw
crowds. This affordable and convenient way to travel is
an effective way for bands to travel from city to city
while bringing them closer together and allowing them
to live out the rock n roll fantasy.

How to get discovered by record labels is still a
difficult process to master, but the opportunities
available today are far greater than any that have come
before. In the old days of getting in front of the top
dogs, you had to develop a regional following and hope

The Featured Band on the Music and Band App this week is
Erica Anthony. Erica plays multiple instruments, is a
singer/songwriter and is located in the San Antonio
area. Her genre is more of a mixture than a clear cut
branding of one style. She has graciously allowed her
song “Waiting On” to be made available via the Music
and Band App.

On having a listen to “Waiting On”, I hear a lot of
energy behind her acoustic performance. With just a
guitar and some nice ambient reverb behind her vocals,
the recording really has a nice live feel. I hear a
little Macy Gray in her voice. The lyrics of “Waiting
On” are personal, dealing with selfishness and how to
start thinking about other people in life. Words to live
by.

Erica Anthony’s music and lyrics are very enticing, and
I invite you to give her a listen. If you already have

Damien Rice: Confessions of an Irish Folk Singer Lover

I have flooded the internet with notions of truly great
music and today I come here to introduce, or perhaps
reintroduce to you, one of the most talented Irishmen
this side of the pond. His parents dubbed him Damien
Rice; I have dubbed him “musical god”, despite the name
dispute, we can all agree on his mammoth wamma-jamma
talent.

Damien Rice was born in Celbridge, Ireland on
December 7, 1973. He released his first studio album in
2002, in which I was not aware of him at that time!
Doesn’t it kill you to find out an artist has been
rocking the public’s socks off for years and you didn’t
have any idea he/she/they even existed!? It reminds me
when people say “isn’t it strange that the person you
marry is out there right now??” That’s how I feel! That
one musician, you know will change your perspective or
aide you through a rough moment in life, is out there
just waiting for you to discover his/her/their
insurmountable talent.

Damien Rice has led me into countless conversations with
damsels in coffee shops across the Portland-Metro area.
How, you may ask? A song may come on and they mouth the
words, they may have an unusually loud iPod flooding
their ears with sultry music of the Irish stallion, and
I just so happen to be an expert in Damien Rice small
talk. I have concealed in my repertoire, numerous Damien
Rice songs that have earned me small tokens of
appreciation; money; a phone number; a look; a stare; an
understanding; basically anything that lets me know
they’re on to me. Suddenly, the term “stranger”
disappears because those whom love Damien Rice have been
friends since their love of his music began.

Damien Rice continues to hold a monumental spot in my
heart, due to the fact he has been the soundtrack to my
incalculable depressive moments, as well as many hours
of pillow talk with past lovers and most likely future.
His subtle voice and delicate guitar caresses the
pallet, but do not let that discourage a moment, when
all you feel is anguish and despair because Rice is a
certified misanthropist as well. The best song example I
can think of from his repertoire, that is the embodiment
of love, despair, and obsession is “Volcano”. Screaming,
screeching, hurt is simply all I can say and is my
favorite songs by Damien Rice, actually, it is one of my
many favorite songs written and performed by Damien
Rice.

In less nuanced terms, Damien Rice sings to my soul.
Having discussed this with my brother Cory, I concluded
that if an artist does not, or no longer, sings to my
soul I could not listen to it. Many folks may couple
this idea with that of a spectator and a painting; if
the subject matter does not evoke emotion, what is the
purpose of staring at it? What is the raison d’être of a
song, an artist, or even the most basic sound, if it
does not make you feel something of worth and value?
When I listen to an artist, I want to feel either/or
cross, contented, cheerless, et cetera. Damien Rice does
precisely that, he takes a feeling puts it into a song
and passes it off to his listeners.

Also, if you enjoy Damien, I would recommend checking
out Elliott Smith, Glen Hansard, Sufjan Stevens and Jeff
Buckley.
